As of the 2010 United States Census, Casper, whose population is approximately 55,300, registers as Wyoming’s second-largest city. Casper holds the nickname "The Oil City", due to its status as a “boom and bust” oil city until the 1920’s. Located east-centrally, at the north end foot of Laramie Mountain Range, Casper is known for its proximity to Casper Mountain and the North Platte River. Interstate 25 is the main traffic artery into and away from Casper, approaching the city from both the north and the east. Like much of Wyoming, Casper boasts a semi-arid climate, providing the area with crisp, dry seasons. Casper is a fast-growing city that provides its residents a small-town feel with big-city opportunities. Its economy is stable and its population is metropolitan and diverse. Rich in natural resources, Casper has remained stable while much of the rest of the country fluctuated. Before its settlement, Casper was inhabited by the Sioux and Cheyenne nations. Northwest of Casper’s downtown area, bison bones and primitive spear joints were discovered by archeologists. The city of Casper was established east of the former site of Fort Caspar, which was built during the mass migration of land seekers during mid-19th century. During this time, several ferries offered transport across the North Platte River. In 1859, a bridge and trading post were built by Louis Guinard near the original ferry locations. 50 miles southwest of Casper on Highway 220, Independence Rock, the "Register of the Desert”, still bears the names and messages carved into it by the pioneers who travelled across the American frontier following the Oregon, Mormon, California and Pony Express trails. Casper is home to dozens of dozens of city parks, which offer our residents a chance to explore the rugged beauty our rich, western heritage. In addition to the landscaped city parks, Casper is also home to many state parks and historic sites to feed the mind. Casper’s residents enjoy a wide variety of activities and events year-round, from outdoor sports to cultural events.
